Adventures in Mosquito Bay
In July 2015 I went to San Juan, Puerto Rico with one of my best friends. This was my first time going out of the United States, so I was very nervous, but also excited at the same time. We stayed there for eight days and we had the best time. We experienced a lot of nature due to the fact that we had to walk everywhere we went. One of the many adventures we faced was traveling to Vieques, a small island next to Puerto Rico. One of the main reasons we came there was because we wanted to go to Bio Bay and Playa Caracas also known as red beach. In order for us to get to the island we had to drive an hour to get to the port then take an hour boat ride to the island; which was only $2 per person. Once we got there we stopped to get something to eat then we took a taxi to the beach. Playa Caracas was such a beautiful beach; there were hills of trees and the water was clear light blue what.
The same day we wanted to go to Bio Bay that night, but we needed a place to sleep. A couple of ladies overheard us and offered us a place to sleep at their house; we decided to stay the night. Later that night we were finally going to Bio Bay. During the tour we had to take a canoe out on the river in the middle of the night, because that was the best time to see the organisms.
Getting into the canoe we had to take off our shoes and step into the slimy fish waste. It was so disgusting because I felt every bit of it in my feet. I was relieved to get into the canoe, but once we got rolling we got stuck in a tree. I am not the best at canoeing, so it took me a minute to catch on. Once we got to the center of the lake he said that we could put our hands in the water to see the light. The tour instructor explained that the light is a reflection of the organism that is in the water. He also explained that sharks come there to lay their eggs and then they will leave. I was so worried about sticking my hand in the water and a shark might bit it off. It was an amazing experience; the water was a pretty glow in the dark blue that surrounds the dark water. I would recommend going to this tour, because it is worth every penny.
